Join the Building Designers Association of Australia and Architectural Historian Eddie Marcus on an encounter of Perth’s architectural history – a view of Old Perth in juxtaposition with the new building’s redefining the city skyline.
Perth notoriously lost much of its heritage in the 70s and 80s, in both the CBD and surrounds. Some attribute this to an influx of wealth, which created the capability to fulfil a desire for modernisation.
50 years on, many seem beholden to this desire still today. How can we modernise whilst ensuring we pay homage to design manifests of the past?
This walk will take you on an urban encounter through the CBD, where echoes of the past are in dialogue with contemporary streetscapes.
As we tour through the architectural design history of Perth, discussion will cover what was lost, what’s been gained, and how we can apply thoughtful design to integrate the new with the old, allowing us to enjoy the best of both worlds for generations to come.

Event participants will be required to traverse approximately 2km on foot during this event. The path of travel will be accessible, with frequent stops at each point-of-interest.
Participants arriving at 5pm will have time for a quick refreshment and informal chat before commencement at 5:30. There will also be opportunity for refreshments and discussion at PICA bar on conclusion of the event.
