PDW 2026: Designing a 24-hour city conversation

A packed audience gathered at The Liberty Theatre on Friday evening for a compelling conversation exploring how Perth can evolve into a city that is vibrant, connected and active around the clock. The discussion considered the many layers that shape a truly liveable urban environment — from major civic initiatives and education precincts to the everyday experience of retail, dining and well-designed public spaces.

Award-winning journalist and architecture and design advocate Claire Tyrrell guided an engaging and forward-looking dialogue with panellists James Sutherland (Arcade Agency), Jim Tsagalis (Lease Equity), Kyle Jeavons (Human-Urban), Natalie Busch (Hassell), Samantha Stewart (URBIS) and Sean Henriques (Edith Cowan University). Key themes included the importance of increasing CBD density, the opportunity to “stretch the day” through programming and activation, and the catalytic role of anchor institutions in driving economic and cultural momentum. Panellists also reflected on Perth’s existing strengths — its climate, lifestyle, natural landscapes and evolving hospitality scene — and the need for
greater coordination and critical mass to fully realise the city’s potential.

Huge thanks to Human-Urban and URBIS for sponsoring this event.
